A 2024 study showed that after 6 months, both therapies led to gains, with ESDM being particularly helpful for social responsiveness and ABA for gross motor skills. Another study showed that toddlers who received ESDM maintained some of their gains even two years after therapy ended.
Interestingly, a UC Davis study found that more hours of therapy don't always equal better results. Consistency is key, so aim for 15-25 hours a week and try to stick to the plan as much as possible. It's also important to personalize the therapy to your child's specific needs, focusing ESDM on social and communication skills and ABA on motor and adaptive skills.
