One study showed that children who started ESDM before 30 months maintained improvements in autism symptoms and adaptive behavior at age 6, and needed less ongoing intervention. Also, toddlers receiving ESDM gained about 18 IQ points!
ABA can also lead to substantial IQ gains (20+ points in some cases) and behavioral improvements. While both therapies outperform standard care, ESDM may have an edge in social communication, while ABA excels in structured skills. A recent study even found ESDM ahead in social reciprocity and ABA in gross motor skills after 6 months!
